💡 Want to share your Waldo dashboards with your team directly in Power BI Service? It’s doable — but it takes a few extra steps since our connector isn’t available in the Microsoft store.
Here’s how to make it work using the on-premises data gateway.
🚦 Why the extra setup?
Because Waldo’s Power BI Connector is a custom connector, Power BI Service doesn’t support it out of the box.
To use it in the cloud (Power BI Service), you’ll need to:
✅ Use Power BI Desktop to build your report
✅ Install a Power BI Gateway on your machine or server
✅ Configure it correctly to allow cloud refreshes
⚙️ Step-by-step: From Desktop to Cloud
1. Create your report in Power BI Desktop
- Open Power BI Desktop
- Go to Get data > Waldo Connector
- Authenticate with your Waldo Admin Account
- Load your data, build your report as usual
- Publish it on Power BI Service
2. Set up your On-premises Data Gateway
👉 Follow Microsoft’s official guide here:
Install an on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn
Here’s what really matters:
- ✅ Use the same Power BI account when installing the gateway
- ✅ Install the gateway in Standard Mode
-
✅ Ensure the custom connector folder is correctly configured
-
✅ Grant the Network Service (NT SERVICE\PBIEgwService) proper permissions to access that folder
📂 Your Waldo Connector (.mez file) should be visible and listed in the gateway’s configuration.
3. Link the gateway with Power BI Service
- Go to Power BI Service
- Head to the Semantic model settings of the Waldo Report you published.
-
Make sure your gateway appears as available and reachable
⚠️ If it’s not visible, double-check the installation mode and folder permissions.
4. Plan your scheduled refresh
Once your gateway is up and connected:
- In Power BI Service, go to your dataset
- Choose Schedule refresh
- Make sure to enable it using the gateway connection
- Use Anonymous as the authentication method if needed
And you’re done ✅
📌 Summary
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Power BI Desktop | To build the report |
| On-premises gateway | Required for cloud refresh |
| Permissions | Network Service must read the connector folder |
| Refresh support | ✅ Yes, after setup |
